Have been putting together readings sheets for the next few months and discovered that VL's set readings don't match the ones in the printed 2007-2008 lectionary for 3rd and 4th Sunday of Epiphany. Our reader phoned CHP who told him the readings had been changed because of a decision at General Synod.

It's going to get confusing anywhere that some people use the booklet and some use VL.

Sally,

This has had me thinking since I read it! I think that what has happened is the VLL compilers have missed a trick here. Because Epiphany falls on a Sunday in 2008, it is also on the First Sunday of Epiphany, which would usually be the Baptism of Christ. This means that the Baptism readings displace those appointed for the Second Sunday of Epiphany, so the readings for the Second Sunday are used on the Third Sunday, those for the Third Sunday, on the Fourth, and then Feb. 3rd is the Sunday next before Lent, or the Presentation, each of which has proper readings. Thus, the poor old Fourth Sunday doesn't get a look in this time round! (It made sense when I wrote it, honest!!!)

Bottom line - VLL definitely seems to be wrong on this one, and the book definitely appears to be right.

As always, I'm prepared to be corrected on this.

God bless,

Stephen

I'm asking the relevant people about this. Fortunately it is fairly easy to fix in an update if the correction is needed.

Dear Tim,

I've done a bit more checking and fathoming, and may be not much further forward! However, GS 1520A (gs1520aamend.doc) on the CofE website, which amends the lectionary, would seem now to have been authorised, because the note at the bottom of p.26 of CW:Times & Seasons confirms the celebration of the Baptism of Christ on the 13th Jan in 2008. GS1520A shows the one week shift I mentioned in my previous post.

This must be a real pain for you guys.

God bless,

Stephen
