I have just purchased a Team Subscription to Visual Liturgy Live.
On attempting to install it on a lap-top, I came across a problem which you may not have thought about. Our original VL was 1.60 which was on floppy, with upgrades to 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0. My new lap-top does not have a floppy drive - I managed to get around it by sharing the floppy drive on my networked office computer and connecting across the wireless network. Considering that there may be others in out team who also do not have a floppy drive on their PC, could I copy the 1.60 files onto a USB memory stick and fool it that way??
I must also comment that when I registered my lap-top copy, I assumed that when it asked for Serial Number I put the CD code in, I ticked the Team Licence and left the next bit blank and it still accepted it. Have I just overwritten the database, or will it work out that this second registration with the same serial number was a team licence?[/p]

Hi -

There are a couple of points here. First, I assume you've purchased an Upgrade Pack for VL Live. If so, then you shouldn't need to worry about installations of VL earlier than VL4, and you shouldn't need your floppy drive. VL Live can only be upgraded from VL 4, not earlier versions, and if it finds a version of VL4 on the PC to which you're installing, then it will install smoothly.

By way of a general point for everyone's information, if you have uninstalled VL4 from your computer, you can upgrade to VL Live by re-installing VL4 first. If you have lost your CD, then please contact us and we can help you install an upgrade to VL Live, but we need to prove your ownership of VL4 and follow some lengthy procedures, so please only do this as a last resort.

Having installed VL Live, you need to register it. The first, principal, team member should enter the serial number from the box, and register. Then go to www.visualliturgylive.net, login, purchase a team licence, and create team member licences (a full walk-through of this process is given here). You can re-register this version if you need to; it sounds as if this is what you have done inadvertently on the laptop. When you install your team members' licences, however, note that each team member should use the registration screen as follows:

  1. Tick the box that says "Check here if you have a team subscription."
  2. Use the serial number from the box as the Team Serial Number
  3. Use the serial number generated for the individual team member in the Serial Number (Required) field.

I hope that clears things up.

The second part regarding the team licence is fine.

But concerning the original problem: when I tried to install Visual Liturgy Live using the Upgrade disc on my lap top the software asks me to insert the disc of an original full version of Visual Liturgy

It will not accept the Visual Liturgy 4.0 upgrade disc as a valid disc.

It will not accept the Visual Liturgy 3.0 upgrade disc as a valid disc. etc.

And as we have upgraded from 1.60, this is only available on floppy.

I would be interested in the answer to this, as well.

As a V1.0 user (!), all my VL disks since then have been upgrades. I suspect that sometime in the next few months I will be moving from my present PC to a laptop (without a floppy drive). Before I do, I want to make sure that I can easily install VL on it. I certainly don't want to go through the hassle of installing VL4 (even assuming that I can get around the fact that I have an upgrade disk, rather than the "original full version"), just so that I can install VL Live.

Hi -

If you only have an upgrade disk, then we can help you "force" an installation of VL4 onto your machine before upgrading to VL Live. This is also useful in cases where you might have lost a computer, or its hard drive, and need to get up-and-running again.

In these cases, insert your VL4 upgrade disk into your computer. It will try to install itself, but when it doesn't find an earlier version, it will ask you for an "upgrade key." There will be a 4-character code in this message box on the screen - for example "ABCD." We need this code to generate an upgrade key for you, so you can either email that key to us at visual.liturgy@c-of-e.org.uk or ring us on 020 7898 1451. We will then give you an upgrade key, which you can type into that box on the screen, and the VL4 upgrade will install normally.

Andrew,

can you just confirm this for me?

If I want to install VL Live on a laptop, I will have to "force" an installation of VL 4 first? That seems a bit barmy. Why can't you just "force" the VL Live installation?

We're wandering into hypothetical territory here, but here are two possible scenarios:
  • If you have bought a VL Live Upgrade version, then we would expect you to be upgrading from a version of VL4; the software expects that, too, so we would encourage and help you to install your VL4 first. If that was itself an upgrade disk, we could "force" it onto your computer so that you can upgrade to VL Live with minimum intervention from us.
  • Once you've installed your VL Live, you'll be registered and known to us as a VL Live user, and we could do the same with your VL Live. So when you have to move computers, or if you're unfortunate enough to lose a hard disk, we could also "force" your VL Live re-installation from a VL Live upgrade disk.

One simple solution to this problem is to purchase a stand-alone floppy disc drive which plugs into a USB port.  They aren't very expensive (c.£20) and it means that you can relive all your yesterdays with any old floppies that might be lying around.  Boomshanka.
